When I worked at Huffman Koos (in New Brunswick, New Jersey) I was required to offer my design services to any customer's purchasing furniture.  We sold Dining Room, Kitchen, Bedroom, Living Room furniture and Drapery fabrics. This job was strictly commission based so I was conditioned to sell quickly (A.B.C) and efficiently. I went over different fabric swatches with the customer, asked for their personal needs and wants. I'd ask if they entertained regularly or not, and if they have children. This is how I'd determine the wear and tear of the fabric- I would also recommend a protestant - spray gaurd.

I would take measurements of their space(s), including the windows, so their furniture would match to fit properly in the space.  I'm familiar with Hunter Douglas window fabric and pleated systems (opaque, transparent, ect...); mainly the designers would offer this to the customer. I also have prior experience in working with fabrics and systems by Hunter Douglas from working in an establishment which sold mainly wall paper. I was required to research each product sold to make sure it fit the customer's needs and wants.
